Water-Based Screen Printing Tip: Simple Tools That Make a Big Difference

If you’re not already using squeeze bottles to dispense your water-based pigments, you’re missing out on a simple, effective upgrade. Affordable options can be found at local dollar stores—those picnic-style ketchup and mustard bottles work great—or you can order sturdier versions from suppliers like Uline.
Here are a few additional tips to improve your water-based ink handling:
Add a glass marble to each bottle
Drop one marble into every squeeze bottle. When you shake it, the marble helps break up settled material and keeps the pigment suspension smooth.
Keep cling wrap at your station
Before closing for the day, place a small piece of plastic wrap between the bottle tip and cap. This prevents air from drying out pigment and stops the nozzle from gumming up overnight.
Wipe rims regularly
Always clean dried ink from the rims of pigment and base containers. Dried chunks can flake off, clogging screens or leaving unwanted spots on garments.
Use distilled water only
When spraying or mixing water into your inks, use distilled water. Tap water often contains minerals or chemicals that can cause reactions and lead to inconsistencies or print issues.
These small habits can make a big difference in ink flow, print consistency, and your overall water-based printing experience.
