Let People Vent

When someone vents, most of the time they don’t want a fix—they want validation. The urge to analyze, advise, or redirect can make things worse, turning a small frustration into conflict.

The simplest way to stay supportive and neutral is to default to “That sucks.” It’s a pressure release valve: empathy without interference. You acknowledge their emotion, not the details of the story. It prevents misinterpretation, defensiveness, or escalation.

Later, if they want solutions, they’ll ask. Until then, “That sucks” is enough.
